xx

Quaint, sensual, and above all minimal, The xx's shy debut proved to be one of the most popular releases of the year.

Toxic Waste and other Listens today

So what have I been listening to today? Lets 'ave a look then;

The Airbourne Toxic Event (Pictured above) - Catchy and sharp Folk pop. Sounds fimiliar but I dont quite know what it's ripping off. Download Mp3

We Have Band - Another band taking up the task of a Funk revival. Download Mp3

Titus Andronicus - Yes, that is a shakesphere play but a band chanting 'Your life is over' is much more dramatic then any of those oldies. Download Mp3

Empire Of The Sun - Revivals sure are the fashion arent they? Good old 70s disco pop. And dressing up in silly fluffy clothing. With masks. Unfortunately this tune wont be too secret for much longer... Download Mp3

Fire At Will! Friendly Fires - Best of '08

This is Friendly Fires. Hyped up early in 2008, received decent album reviews but it wasn't their year. Maybe this year? I dont know, but the only thing for definate is that you should hear their album. I was quite literally -if even a bit clichéd- blown away. They sound new and different and still amazingly good, catchy and memorable. I'm now going to have to rethink my top 10 albums of '08 just because of them. The album is terrific and the two Mp3s I've posted are the ones that blew me away most, but don't get the impression they are the best songs on the album. They're only the ones I took the most notice of.

Great Eskimo Paradox

Yesterday I was in HMV. Moving towards the vinyl section I had grabbed an NME of a shelf on the way. After hunting for Foals 7" singles and failing, I returned to buy NME along with the Jonny Greenwood album (its an instrumental soundtrack for the film There Will Be Blood) when I realised the NME in my hand was different from the one on the Shelves. It had 'gone out of date' and was replaced with the NME New Noise issue (it was interesting- I thought the virgins were a 2008 band but apparently not) while I was browsing for 'quality' music. So I had two out-of-date magazines to read on the tube home.

Then today I went on the Great Eskimo Hoax MySpace. After listening to the first song on the MySpace player I realised that the song had only just been uploaded and I was the first to hear it! Normaly I would've brushed something like this aside but combined with yesterday's similar event I became suspicious. Coincedence? I think not... some greater force is working to make me tell you about this band.

They are very similar to Foals and although they are slightly jazzier if the vocals were more like Foals than sounding like Blur I would easily believe it was a Foals track. So think Foals meets Blur with a pinch of Jazz.

New Foals Jams! (Yeah!)

As I've previously stated, Yannis Phillipakis of Foals has stated that their new album will sound that of the dying dream of an eagle. What does the dream of a dying eagle sound like? Well, from the new jam sessions for the album that have been posted on the Foals Myspace blog, it sounds pretty damn good.
They (the jams - XCFAVA mainly) remind me quite alot of Radiohead's song Nude. It seems to be the senseless words which are sung quite high in the background of part of XCFAVA that draws me to think this, but dont think that it will be slow and beautiful. It is very much quick and on all four feet. The effects pedal are noticeably changing, but they are only really just playing about. Theyre pretty short too so dont expect anything epic for a trio of free downloads.
The 5 Jams are split into two (and the first jam is kinda split into two); Late Night and Early Morning. I'll let you figure out what those mean...

The Sound of 2009 - Musical Debuts and Follow-ups this year.

Klaxons - Recently showcased new songs for their 2007 Mercury Winner 'Myths of The Near Future' follow-up in Brazil on their World tour. Aparently going for a darker edgier sound like their song 'Magik' and less like the rest of the album. Just dont get too carried away with the effects lads?

Radiohead - Everyones favourite Mercury nominees follow-up 'In Rainbows'. Maybe this one will finally win a Mercury? Either way, they'll have to work hard to outshine the now legendary pay as you like release of 'In Rainbows' from 2007.

Blur - After announcing they would play Hyde Park in the summer they also hinted at a UK tour but what about a new Album? Damon's finished his Opera, Monkey Journey to The West, and Gorrillaz don't seem to be doing anything so we can all hope for some new Brit-pop anthems in good faith.

We Have Band -If their début album is as catchy as their début single, 'Oh!' then this trio are ones to keep both eyes on.

Lightspeed Champion - He's already written his third album... C'mon Dev, give over the second Strokes inspired album to us first!

Vampire Weekend - Having dubbed their 2008 début follow-up Album 'Graduation'. Kanye West probably wont be featuring, but orchestral backing will make a return.

Foals - Oxford's math-rocker and Foals front man Yannis Phillipakis says the Antidotes follow-up will sound like the dream of a dying eagle. And they wont cut their hair till its released. Expect the alternative.

Franz Ferdinand - Can they make up the disappointment of their last album and the 3-year wait? If the rest of the album is like their new single 'Ulysses', it may well be able to match their first.

Amazing Baby - Their 'Infinite Fucking Cross' Ep (download for free from their website) is a psychedelic mix between Led Zeppelin and MGMT. With any luck the Brooklyner's album will be even weirder and twice as catchy...

Late of The Pier- With promises of plenty of new singles this year from the Castle Donnington nu-ravers they'll be conquering music genres you probably wont have heard of with or without a new album.

Coldplay - Chris Martin and co. have said they've already written songs for a new album . Oh well. Not every year is perfect.

Kasabian - Previewed their new album at Creamfields festival (dance music festival) in 2008. As long as its not too psychedelic... we don't want them overshadowed by Amazing Baby now?

Little Boots - Tucked away in production last year Little Boots looks like a new artist ready to breakthrough sit up among the tops of the charts with some catchy pop tunes. Hopefully.
